April is national Fair Housing Month. The Fair Housing Act, passed to prevent discrimination in housing based on race, color, sex, national origin, or religion, was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on April 11, 1968.
This legislation and Hawai`i state laws prohibit any discriminatory practices in the sale, rental, financing, or advertising of a dwelling. Free “FAIR HOUSING: THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME” training is open to the public, will be held in each county during April. The workshops include an overview of the law, information about protected classes, and current information about reasonable accommodation requests and assistance animal requests, for a disability.
