DLIR DIRECTOR PROVIDES UPDATE ON CARES ACT UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSIONS

HONOLULU — The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) today announced some of the details regarding H.R. 133, which in part provides extensions to CARES Act unemployment provisions. Congress passed the measure on Monday evening and is in the process of being sent to the President to sign.

“We are relieved that Congress has acted to continue to provide unemployment insurance benefits and assistance to claimants as our Hawaii Ohana continues to struggle from the effects of COVID-19 on our community” said Director Anne Perreira-Eustaquio. “Once the bill is signed there are processing steps that need to be taken prior to implementing the extensions. These steps include formal guidance from the U.S. DOL, funding allotments, and IT programming changes, among others.”

At this time, the department is anticipating guidance from the U.S. DOL by the end of the month. While the Department waits for that guidance, it is diligently working to build additional programs within its unemployment computer system to process the revised federal benefits and bring much-needed relief to eligible claimants. Any benefits delayed will be paid retroactively if necessary and claimants will be made whole.
