ACT 56 SIGNED INTO LAW

Extends the Statute of Limitations to File a Complaint with the Civil Rights Commission

On May 28, 2026, in Gov. Msg. No. 1156, Governor Josh Green signed into law Senate Bill 2727, H.D.1, C.D.1, relating to discrimination. This law took effect upon its approval by the Governor on May 28, 2026.

Act 56 extends the statute of limitations to file complaints with the Hawai‘i Civil Rights Commission to one (1) year from when an alleged unlawful discriminatory practice occurred, or of the last occurrence in a pattern of ongoing discriminatory practice.

This statutory expansion will be applied prospectively and applies to claims that had not yet expired on the date of enactment.
