STATE ANNOUNCES INAUGURAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK OCTOBER 24 – 29
Celebration of 75 Years of Apprenticeship in Hawaii
HONOLULU — Apprenticeship has a long and deep-rooted history in Hawaii. A special session of the Territorial Legislature in 1941 enacted the apprenticeship law that celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) today announced the inaugural Apprenticeship Hawaii Week, October 24 – 29, 2016. The State Apprenticeship Council, Honolulu Community College, Apprenticeship and Training Coordinators Association of Hawaii, and apprenticeship sponsors are co-sponsoring the celebration.
“In Hawaii, there are over 50 apprenticeship occupations. On average, apprentices who complete their program earn approximately $300,000 more over their careers than non-apprenticeship participants,” said DLIR Director Linda Chu Takayama. “Our goal is to promote the viability of a career in an employer-driven apprenticeship where the employee earns and learns under the guidance and training of a skilled mentor.”
