The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program expired on September 6, 2021.
You may qualify for a second PUA claim in Hawaii if you filed for PUA in another state and that state stopped paying PUA benefits before the program expired. Please note that no PUA benefits will be paid for weeks ending after September 4, 2021.
In order to qualify for a second PUA claim in Hawaii you must:
- have worked in Hawaii at the initial time of becoming
unemployed, partially unemployed, or unable or unavailable to work because
of approved COVID-19 related reason(s) OR after you filed the
original PUA claim in another state.
- have remaining PUA entitlement. PUA is available
for a total of 79 weeks. Any weeks in which you collected regular
Unemployment Compensation (UC) or Extended Benefits or PUA in the other
state between the weeks ending February 8, 2020, and the last week ending
date for which the other state paid you PUA will be deducted from any
potential PUA entitlement in Hawaii.
- verify or validate your identity;
- submit documentation substantiating employment or self-employment
(or the planned commencement of employment or self-employment) performed
in [your state name]. No PUA benefits can be paid until this
documentation is received and approved; and
- meet all other eligibility requirements.
If you meet the eligibility
requirements above, you may apply for PUA benefits at https://labor.hawaii.gov/ui/appointments. Click on “UI PUA Appointments” and select an
appointment time. Please indicate on your request that you would like to
apply for PUA benefits. A representative will contact you at your
appointed time to take your PUA application over the telephone.
