70 Second Radio Message on 2023 Trench and Excavation Program
The primary hazard of trenching and excavation work is employee injury from a cave-in. The Hawaii occupational safety and health office – HIOSH wants you to know that incidents are avoidable if you remember these three things:, “Slope it. Shore it. Shield it”. Slope the trench walls, shore trench walls with supports, or shield the walls with trench boxes. Employers should also make sure that there is a safe way for employees to enter and exit the trench and materials are kept away from the edge of the trench. Before entering the trench look for standing water or atmospheric hazards. Never enter a trench unless it has been properly inspected.
