Eight Schools Win 2018 E Ola Pono Awards

HONOLULU – Organizers of the 11th Annual E Ola Pono Campaign are pleased to announce the winners in this year’s competition aimed at promoting peace, pono and respect at schools and communities throughout Hawaiʻi. Prizes were awarded to seven schools from all four Oʻahu school districts and a 3rd place award to an Elementary school on the Island of Hawai‘i.
Ties were announced for both first and second place in the Elementary School Division. Blanche Pope Elementary and Ka‘ewa Elementary were tied for first place. Ben Parker Elementary and Makaha Elementary were tied for second place.
In the Middle/ Intermediate School Division, first place went to Ewa Makai Middle School, for the second year in a row. Second place went to Washington Middle School.
For the second year in a row, judges awarded first place in the High School Division to Farrington High School.
The Elementary school division had many powerful campaign entries making the judging difficult to determine a 1st and 2nd place winner. Kohala Elementary on the Island of Hawaii Pono Campaign also scored high with the judges and they have been honored with 3rd Place and will be awarded $250.
The E Ola Pono Campaign was begun in 2007 as a cultural response to the problem of bullying in the schools. The annual campaign that runs between August and March encourages students to initiate and lead programs that promote peace and respect in their schools and communities. Students are challenged to design projects that will actively help their peers “grow pono.”
Schools Superintendent Christina M. Kishimoto has described the E Ola Pono Campaign as an excellent example of how student voice and leadership can be promoted and showcased.
“This year’s winners have again demonstrated how imaginative thinking and well organized and implemented efforts can promote positive attitudes and outcomes in our schools and communities,” said, Pono Campaign coordinator Sara Ka‘imipono Banks.
First place winners are awarded $1,000. Second place winners receive $500.
Organizers are grateful to the Johnson ‘Ohana Charitable Foundation for providing cash prizes. Kim and Jack Johnson are behind the charitable foundation that supports environmental, art and music education.
Administration of the E Ola Pono Campaign is supported through U.S. Department of Education Native Hawaiian Education grant funds.
