NEW ID PROOFING METHODS FOR CLAIMANTS
The Hawaii Unemployment Insurance Division, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the U.S. Postal Service have partnered to offer unemployment insurance claimants the ability to provide the proof of ID needed to continue a claim for UI benefits through two new sources – Login.gov and USPS in person proofing.
Login.gov provides claimants the ability to verify their ID digitally through a secure government website. Individuals selecting to verify their identity through Login.gov will be asked to create an account and securely provide their information for validation. Claimants will also have the option to provide the proof of ID at the majority of post offices across the state. This partnership leverages the USPS’ extensive national retail footprint by allowing individuals to meet the ID verification requirement in just minutes and within a few miles of home.
These new identity verification methods will help improve fraud prevention in the UI program while ensuring eligible claimants receive UI benefits regardless of their location or ability to access technology. Additionally, these new identity-proofing methods demonstrate a successful federal and state collaboration will help ensure the integrity of the unemployment insurance system while expediting benefits when needed most.
Claimants filing for UI benefits on or after August 24, 2023 must provide proof of ID through one of these methods to continue their claim for UI benefits. Claimants can select a method of ID proofing through their initial claim confirmation page or through their claimant dashboard.
Postal workers at the participating locations are trained to complete ID proofing services only and cannot answer questions about unemployment insurance claims.
